FAQ

Questions

Straight answers to the things people usually ask before hiring Nyoni. If yours isn’t here, ask.

Working together

Who will we be working with?

A small studio team led by Anthony Mwaura, founder and creative director. You have one named point of contact from the first call to the final files, and the people who design and build your project are the people you speak to. For specialist work such as photography, voice-over, translation and printing, we bring in trusted partners and coordinate them for you, at cost.

Staying small is why our prices are lower than a large agency’s, and why we take a limited number of projects at a time, so the dates we give you are dates we keep.

What happens if someone on the project is unavailable?

Every project lives in shared folders and version control from day one, so nothing exists only on one laptop and someone else can pick it up. If there’s a delay of more than a few days, you’ll hear from us with a revised plan. For websites, you always have the dashboard login, the hosting account and the code.

Where are you based? Do you work outside Kirinyaga?

Nyoni is based in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County. Most work is done remotely, with calls by phone, WhatsApp or video, so location rarely matters. We work with organisations anywhere in Kenya, East Africa and beyond. For workshops that are better in person, travel within Kenya is quoted at cost.

How quickly can you start?

Usually within one to three weeks of a signed quote and deposit. If you have a fixed deadline, such as an AGM, a launch or a donor visit, mention it in your first message and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s achievable.

Do you use AI? Is our information safe?

Yes, we use AI tools (mainly Claude) for research, first drafts, code and checks. Every deliverable is reviewed and finished by a person on our team, and facts are checked against sources. Confidential material isn’t used to train AI models, and we’ll follow your organisation’s AI policy if you have one. Logos and illustrations are designed by hand, never generated. More on how we use AI.

Prices and payment

Why are your prices published?

Because it saves everyone time. You can see whether Nyoni fits your budget before we speak, and we don’t spend calls with organisations that were expecting a KES 20,000 website. The package prices are starting points; your written quote confirms the figure for your project.

How do payments work?

Projects under KES 50,000 are paid upfront. Larger projects are paid in stages: usually 50% to start and 50% before launch, or 40/30/30 for projects over KES 300,000. Care plans are paid monthly in advance. You can pay by M-Pesa, bank transfer (KES or USD) or card. Full payment terms.

Can you work with our procurement process?

Yes. We can provide formal quotes and proposals, pro-forma and tax invoices, a KRA PIN certificate and registration documents, sign an NDA, and work against a purchase order. See Working with organisations.

Do you charge in US dollars?

Yes, for organisations that budget in dollars. Dollar prices on the site are a guide based on the current exchange rate; the quote fixes the figure in whichever currency you’ll pay in.

What isn’t included in the price?

Third-party costs: hosting, domain names, stock images, paid plugins, printing, voice-over and translation. These are passed on at cost, or you pay the supplier directly. Each quote lists them so there are no surprises.

What counts as a revision round?

One consolidated set of feedback on a piece of work, gathered from everyone who needs a say. Ten small changes sent together is one round; the same ten sent one at a time over two weeks is several. Each package includes two or three rounds, and extra rounds can be added.

Ownership and files

Who owns the work?

You do, once it’s paid for in full: the logo files, the website code and content, the documents and their source files. The domain name and hosting account are registered in your organisation’s name. We may show the work in Nyoni’s portfolio unless you ask us not to in writing.

Will we be locked in to Nyoni?

No. Websites are built on standard, widely supported technology (PHP and a simple database) that any competent developer can maintain. You get the code, the logins and the documentation. Care plans are optional and can be cancelled with 30 days’ notice after the first three months.

Websites

Do you use WordPress?

Not by default. Nyoni websites are built by hand with a small, purpose-built dashboard, which makes them faster, more secure and cheaper to keep running than a typical WordPress site with dozens of plugins. If your organisation needs WordPress (for example, to match an existing system), say so and we’ll quote for it.

Can our team update the website ourselves?

Yes. Every website includes a dashboard where you can edit text, publish articles, change photos, update prices and team members, and read form enquiries. It’s designed for people who’ve never used a website admin before, and you get an hour of training and a written guide.

What about hosting and the domain?

We’ll recommend a reliable host (usually a Kenyan or European provider, depending on your audience), set it up in your organisation’s name, and connect your domain. Hosting and the domain typically cost KES 6,000 to 20,000 a year, paid directly to the provider.

Can you redesign our existing website?

Yes. We review what you have first: what’s working, what content can be kept, and where visitors drop off. Redirects from old page addresses are included, so you don’t lose search rankings or break links people have saved.

Brand identity

Can you refresh our logo instead of replacing it?

Often that’s the better choice. A refresh keeps what people already recognise and fixes what isn’t working: poor files, inconsistent colours, a mark that’s unreadable at small sizes. We’ll tell you honestly which you need.

Do you register trademarks?

No. Trademark registration in Kenya goes through the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI), usually with a lawyer or agent. We provide the artwork files they need.

Graphic design

Can you design for our existing brand?

Yes, that’s the usual case. Send your logo files and any brand guidelines and we’ll design to them. If the guidelines are thin, we’ll agree a few simple rules first so every piece looks consistent.

Do you handle printing?

We prepare print-ready files to your printer’s specifications and can manage the printer for you, with printing passed on at cost. Or you take the files to your own printer; we’ll check their requirements before sending.

Why not use Canva ourselves?

For quick posts, you should, and the Template kit sets your team up to do exactly that. Where a designer helps is the work that has to stand out or hold together: a campaign’s key visual, a large-format banner, a piece going to print, or the templates themselves.

Reports and presentations

Do you write the report too?

The packages include copy editing: making your text clearer, shorter and consistent. If you need the report written from interviews, data or notes, copywriting can be added per page.

What is an accessible PDF and do we need one?

An accessible PDF has proper headings, reading order and descriptions of images and charts, so people using screen readers can read it. Many donors and public bodies now expect it. Every Nyoni report includes an accessible digital version alongside the print file.

3D and motion

What do you need to make a logo animation?

Your logo as a vector file (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) and your brand colours. If you only have a JPEG or PNG, we can redraw it as a vector first for an extra fee, which also gives you better files for everything else.

How long does rendering take, and can we make changes after?

Rendering is the slow part, which is why every project starts with a storyboard and a single approved still frame. Changes to timing are quick; changes to the overall look after animation has started may need an extra round.

Nyoni Care

Do unused hours roll over?

No. Hours reset each month so the time is reserved for you without building up a backlog. If you regularly need more, moving up a plan is cheaper than paying the day rate.

Can we have a Care plan for a website you didn’t build?

Sometimes. We review it first. If it’s built on a standard platform and in reasonable shape, yes. If it would take significant work to make secure, we’ll quote for that first.
